India's leading and only publicly traded company in the sector, is demonstrating to the rest of the world how to properly dispose-off Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
It's a one-of-a-kind project that's been gaining traction in and around the country's commercial capital, thanks to a downloadable app.
India, as one of the world's fastest-growing economies, will see an increase in the amount of e-waste produced by both households and businesses, in addition to illegal imports.
Having grasped the future of e-waste in India, such initiatives, through its unique mobile app technology, will play a significant role in paving a green path for India.
It is a smartphone app designed to help users provide the convenience of collecting their e-waste at their doorstep and take it to recycle.
According to the CMD of the company, the app has received a positive response from the target community, which values the environment over financial benefits from e-waste.
During the beta testing phase, the organization made several trips with its dedicated vehicles to assist these registered users of the app, collecting e-waste from nearly 700 locations.
Printers, keyboards, Mobile phones, chargers, TVs, laptops, desktops, grinders, microwaves, irons, refrigerators, washing machines, and other e-waste or discarded electronic content are among the items collected.
The rise in utilization of digital tools, online transactions, smart city projects, and technological change are all contributing to India's growing e-waste.
By 2025, the country is expected to produce eight million tons of e-waste. The CMD specified that “We should not be worried about a growing quantity of WEEE, because it’s a direct reflection of our socio-economic growth. The app is an easy-to-use app that enables people and organizations to get their e-waste collected and recycled responsibly. This initiative aims to play a key role in assisting not only the end-users but the OEMs and regulator in effectively implementing the rules and achieving desired targets seamlessly and effortlessly.”
In a country like India, the importance of such app is critical. Improper e-waste disposal in landfills or other non-dumping areas poses significant health risks to current and future generations, as well as polluting habitats.
