Kids these days care about the environment, and want the products of their everyday life to be more sustainable ones. Keeping this idea in mind, The LEGO Group has worked on the latest step towards sustainability which is the unveiling of the prototype brick made from discarded PET bottles.
There was a team of more that 150 material scientist and engineers who worked for three years on the sustainable product. Around 250 variations of PET materials were worked on to arrive at the prototype that meets the quality, safety and play requirements.
The Vice President of Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group, Tim Brooks said: “We are super excited about this breakthrough. The biggest challenge on our sustainability journey is rethinking and innovating new materials that are as durable, strong and high quality as our existing bricks – and fit with LEGO elements made over the past 60 years. With this prototype we’re able to showcase the progress we’re making.”
While doing this what was the most important factor was uncompromised quality and safety. The final product will take a while till it reached the stores. Work is on with regards to the testing and development and the next phase of testing will take at least one more year. Experimentation and failing is an important part of learning and innovation.
