Warangal is a city located in the Telangana state of India. The city has a majestic history of serving as the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty at around 1163. It is one of the 11 cities in India chosen for the Heritage City Development by the Govt. of India.
In addition to having a privileged space in the history of Telangana, the city’s municipal corporation viz., The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) along with Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), has been chosen for developing plastic waste-free cities project under Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) and International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).
The ICLEI, in the month of January, invited Expression of Interest for the participation in the project. Across India, a total of 10 cities, including GWMC and SMC, applied for the project.
The selection process involved a virtual meeting held on March 19, where the GWMC Municipal Commissioner Pamela Satpathy shed light on various aspects of the Local Urban Body along with technical and economic aspects. Following the virtual event, the ICLEI disclosed that they have selected the Warangal Corporation for the programme.
What to look forward to from the project?
The project once gained momentum will eye on making the city plastic-free by mid-July. The project will receive funds somewhere in between 2 to 6 crores. The effort, which will span over 20 months, will assist the selected cities in developing plastic waste management programmes.
