Only five percent of the material was in the correct condition to be recycled.
Of the 40 million tons of plastic waste generated in the United States last year, only five to six percent—or about two million tons—was recycled, according to a new =”https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5eda91260bbb7e7a4bf528d8/t/62726edceb7cc742d53eb073/1651666652743/The+Real+Truth+about+the+U.S.+Plastic+Recycling+Rate+2021+Facts+and+Figures+_5-4-22.pdf” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>report, conducted by the environmental groups Beyond Plastics and The Last Beach Cleanup. About 85 percent went to landfills, and ten percent was incinerated. The rate of plastic recycling decreased since 2018, when it was at 8.7 percent, per the study.
“The paltry 5-6 percent U.S. plastic recycling rate in 2021 should be a wake-up call to the false promise that plastic recycling is a credible solution to plastic waste and pollution,” the report states. “It’s time to implement real solutions, particularly the reduction of single-use plastic food service items that have the highest likelihood of polluting our environment.”
U.S. plastic waste exports, which are included in recycling rates, decreased from 1.84 million tons in 2017 to 0.61 million tons in 2021 as countries such as China began ceasing to accept America’s waste, per the report. The U.S. doesn’t have the capability to recycle all of its own plastic, Jan Dell, founder of the Last Beach Cleanup, tells the Guardian’s Katharine Gammon.
“We don’t have factories to do it,” she tells the publication. “It’s also very water-intensive, so we’re not going to build more plastic recycling facilities in the U.S.”
But despite a lack of recycling facilities, plastic waste has increased five-fold in the U.S. from 1980 to 2018. In 1980, the U.S. produced 7.4 million tons of plastic waste, and 38 years later, that number grew to 35.7 million tons, per the report.
At its peak in 2014, plastic recycling rates only reached 9.5 percent. Yet the authors write the low level of plastic recycling doesn’t seem to lie in the act of recycling itself, because paper recycling has increased from 21.3 percent in 1980 to 68.2 percent in 2018.
Instead, they blame a “decades-long misinformation campaign to perpetuate the myth that plastic is recyclable.” Additionally, Judith Enck, the president of Beyond Plastics, tells Earther’s Angely Mercado that the three arrow recycling symbol is misleading, because most municipalities recycle only certain types of plastics.
“Consumers are understandably confused,” Enck tells the organization. “They see the recycling logo, so they put the plastic packaging in their recycling bin.”
When residents co-mingle recyclable plastics with non-recyclable plastics, they contaminate loads, which then “usually get bundled for landfills or incineration,” per the study.
Even plastics that do make it to recycling facilities aren't all recycled, the authors report, stating that 30 to 36 percent of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles are wasted during the recycling process.
“We need new laws on the books that reduce the amount of plastic packaging,” Enck tells Earther. “Because these companies are not going to reduce enough on their own, and consumers are left with little choices.”

Definitely returning here, that is decided, and a look at shopthomasashbourne only made the case stronger, this is one of those rare websites that rewards regular visits rather than feeling stale after the first read which is something I cannot say about most of the places I bookmark today across all my topics.

Liked the careful selection of which details to include and which to skip, and a stop at zavirotrustco reflected the same editorial judgement, knowing what to leave out is just as important as knowing what to include and this site has clearly figured out where that line sits for the topics it covers regularly.

So — been using this thing for about a few months now and I keep coming back, so thought I’d say something since a lad on another thread asked me a few days back. Am based in the UK, mainly stick to footie and the horses, a fiver here and there, for context.
The reason I started using it was genuinely a bit daft — I never could figure out what an e/w payout actually came to with 1/5 odds a place. Basically I’d eyeball it and then be surprised. Now I punch the numbers in first, every time, even the boring singles.
The single bet calculator is the bit I open most — you drop in the price and your stake and it shows returns instantly, either odds format. Same tool covers the fiddly ones — trebles returns, lucky 15 and lucky 63, yankees, which is where most people I know lose track. If you want a look, it’s here odds converter betting — free, no signup.
The thing that genuinely made a difference were the nerdier tools. The odds-to-probability calculator and it makes obvious how much the bookie’s taking, and there’s the kelly staking tool — I use half kelly as the full version is a quick route to a dead bankroll. The dutch tool is decent for when I’m spreading across selections.
It’s not perfect mind. Its interface is a bit basic — no flash, which honestly I don’t mind but some will. On my phone it’s fine although the acca grid make you pinch and zoom. And no proper app, it’s a website and that’s it — fine by me just flagging it.
Anyway. Free, not plastered in adverts, does the job. If anyone still works out returns on a calculator app, give it a go — saved me a load of “wait, that’s it?” moments.

So — have been messing about with this thing for about six months now and it’s stuck on my phone, reckon I’d write something up since a lad on another thread asked me last week. I’m based in the UK, mainly do football and horses, a fiver here and there, just so you know where I’m coming from.
How I found it was actually embarrassing — I never could get my head round what an e/w return would be when the place terms changed. Basically I’d wing it and moan when the payout landed. Now I stick my stake in first, every time, even a simple single bet.
Their single bet calculator is the bit I open most — you put in the price and your stake and it spits out profit and total return instantly, either odds format. It also handles the multiples — acca and treble returns, a lucky 15, patents and yankees, honestly that’s where most people I know got it wrong. If you fancy a poke about, it lives at kelly calculator sports betting and there’s no login wall, which I appreciated.
The thing that actually changed how I bet was the geekier extras. The implied probability calculator that shows what margin’s baked in, and there’s the kelly criterion tool — I stick to fractional kelly since full stakes are far too aggressive. The dutching one is decent for when I’m spreading across selections.
It’s not perfect mind. The interface feels pretty plain — no frills, it’s clearly function over form. On mobile it works although the bigger tables are a squeeze. And no app, just the site — fine by me but worth saying.
Right, that’s me. Free, no ads shoved in your face, works. Anyone who honestly does the maths on paper, give it a go — saved me plenty of dumb bets I’d have regretted.

Granted I am giving this site more credit than I usually give new finds, and a look at feb-en continued earning that credit, the calibration of how much trust to extend after limited exposure is something I do carefully and this site has earned more trust on shorter exposure than most due to consistent quality across.
EanFurry
Now feeling the post has earned a proper recommendation rather than a casual mention, and a stop at banehmagic reinforced the recommendation strength, the difference between mentioning and recommending is a small editorial distinction I observe in my own conversations and this site has earned the upgraded recommendation level from me confidently today.
Marcusreica
The structure of the post made it easy to follow without losing track of where I was, and a look at apkcontainer kept the same logical flow going, this site clearly understands that organisation is half the battle in keeping readers engaged from the first line to the last across any kind of post.
Elmercom
Now noticing how rare it is to find a site that does not feel rushed, and a look at cavaroline extended that calm pace, content produced without time pressure has a different quality than content shipped to meet a deadline and this site reads as written without urgency which produces a different and better experience for readers.
Richardaxomb
Really grateful for content like this, it does not waste my time and it does not insult my intelligence either, and a quick look at thesandiegoleague was the same, balanced respectful writing that makes a person feel welcome rather than rushed through pages of forced engagement just to keep clicking around.
Deondeery
Came across this looking for something else entirely and ended up reading it through twice, and a look at qorivotrustco pulled me deeper into the site than I planned, the writing has a way of holding attention without resorting to manipulative cliffhangers or vague promises that never get delivered later down the page.
WadeGop
A small thing but the line spacing and font choices made reading this physically pleasant, and a look at nolaroline maintained the same careful design, technical choices about typography are part of what makes online reading actually comfortable and this site has clearly invested in the design layer alongside the content layer carefully.
Bjornsweem
Now adding the homepage to my regular check rotation rather than waiting for individual links to find me, and a stop at customerfirstshoppinghub confirmed the rotation upgrade, the move from passive discovery to active checking is a vote of confidence in a sites ongoing quality and this site has earned that active engagement clearly.
FloydFlump
Considered as a whole this site has developed a coherent point of view that comes through in individual pieces, and a look at kavionline continued displaying that coherence, sites with a unified perspective rather than a grab bag of takes are sites with editorial maturity and this one has clearly developed that maturity through years of work.

Now planning to write about the topic myself eventually using this post as a reference, and a look at jestraproperties would also serve in that future piece, content that becomes raw material for my own writing rather than just informing my reading is content with multiplicative value and this site is generating that multiplicative effect.
Avicef
Big thanks to whoever wrote this, you saved me a lot of time hunting for the same info on other sites, and a stop at deathrayvision only added more useful detail without going off topic, that kind of focus is honestly hard to come across these days when most posts wander everywhere.
AxelSoade
Reading this in the morning set a good tone for the day, and a quick visit to votersuppressionshame kept that good tone going, content can do that sometimes when it hits the right notes and finding sites that consistently strike that tone is something I have learned to recognise and reward with regular visits.
DaltonPlugs
Considered against the flood of similar content this one stands apart in important ways, and a stop at TheSandiegoLeague extended that distinctive feel, sites that find their own corner of a crowded topic and stay there are sites worth following and this one has clearly carved out its own space and committed to defending it carefully.
RichardCox
Big thanks to whoever wrote this, you saved me a lot of time hunting for the same info on other sites, and a stop at trivoxcore only added more useful detail without going off topic, that kind of focus is honestly hard to come across these days when most posts wander everywhere.

Felt the post handled a sensitive angle of the topic with appropriate care, and a look at queenmshop extended that careful handling across related material, sites that can navigate delicate territory without causing damage are rare and require a level of judgement that comes from experience rather than from following any clear playbook.
TommySew
Coming back tomorrow when I can give this a proper read, the post deserves better attention than I can give right now, and a look at xelivoline suggests there is plenty more here that deserves the same treatment, definitely a site I will be exploring properly over the next few days when I can.
RafaelSpusa
Now noticing that the post benefited from being neither too short nor too long for its content, and a look at alexanderbuonointl continued that calibration of length, sites that match length to content rather than padding to hit some target are sites that respect both their material and their readers and this site does both.
Germansnolf
Recommended without reservation for anyone interested in the topic at any level of expertise, and a look at SaveAustinNeighborhoods only strengthens that recommendation, this site clearly knows how to serve readers across a range of backgrounds without watering down the content or talking past anyone in the audience which is genuinely impressive to see.
Noeldem
Now recognising the editorial wisdom of letting some questions remain open at the end, and a look at xelarionet continued that intellectual honesty, content that does not force closure on contested questions is content that respects the limits of knowledge and this site has clearly developed the maturity to know when to leave space.
LeonardEdise
Looking through other posts here the consistency is what makes the site valuable rather than any single piece, and a stop at raspinakala extended that consistency observation, sites whose value lies in the ongoing pattern rather than in standout posts are sites I trust more deeply and this one has clearly built that kind of trust.
Borisamugh
Now leaving a small mental note to recommend this when the topic comes up in conversation, and a look at blpawards extended that recommend ready feeling, content that arms me with shareable references for likely future conversations is content with social value and this site is providing that conversational ammunition consistently for me lately.
RayVence
Coming back tomorrow when I can give this a proper read, the post deserves better attention than I can give right now, and a look at kruisefest suggests there is plenty more here that deserves the same treatment, definitely a site I will be exploring properly over the next few days when I can.
Williejew
Top notch writing, every paragraph carries weight and nothing feels like filler, and a stop at trivoxtrustco reflected that same care, a rare thing on the open web these days where most pages exist for clicks rather than actual reader value or anything close to that which is honestly a real shame.

Decided to set aside time later to read more carefully, and a stop at xaliroline reinforced that decision, content that earns a calendar entry rather than just a passing read is in a different tier altogether and this site is clearly working at that elevated level which I really do appreciate as a reader today.
SteveScuff
Reading this confirmed something I had been suspecting about the topic, and a look at realherschel pushed that confirmation toward greater confidence, content that lines up with independently held intuitions earns a special kind of trust and I will return to writers who consistently land that way for me without overselling positions.
NathanielWek
Liked that the post landed without needing to manufacture controversy or take a contrarian stance for attention, and a stop at yaveroline continued that grounded approach, content that earns attention through quality rather than provocation is the kind that builds long term trust rather than burning it on quick wins.
Robertozok
Reading this prompted a brief but useful conversation with a colleague who happened to walk by, and a stop at SpikeIsland2020 extended that conversational seed, content that becomes a starting point for in person discussion rather than ending in solitary reading is content with social generative energy and this site has plenty of it apparently.

Worth recognising that this site does not chase the daily news cycle, and a stop at torivoline confirmed the longer publication arc, sites that resist the pressure to comment on every passing event are sites with genuine editorial discipline and this one has clearly chosen depth over volume which I respect deeply.

Felt the writer respected me as a reader without making a show of doing so, and a look at kaviontrustee continued that quiet respect, this is the kind of small but meaningful detail that separates the sites I bookmark from the ones I close after a single skim and never return to again no matter how interesting the headline.
DemarcusEteds
Now considering the post as evidence that careful blog writing is still possible, and a look at Paws21AirbrushStudio extended that evidence, the broader question of whether the modern web can sustain quality writing has obvious empirical answers in sites like this one and seeing them is reassuring even when they remain a minority overall today.
Cedricrob
Now realising this site has been quietly doing good work for longer than I knew, and a look at customthepc suggested an archive worth exploring, sites with deep archives of consistent quality represent a different kind of resource than sites with viral hits and this one looks like the durable kind based on what I see.
Trentoncar
A relief to read something where I did not have to fact check every claim mentally, and a look at xelarionix continued that reliable feeling, sites where I can lower my guard and trust the content are rare and this one is earning that trust paragraph by paragraph through consistent careful work behind the scenes.
Tracenex
Started forming counter examples to test the claims and the post handled most of them implicitly, and a look at GetBranDalIsm continued that anticipatory style, writers who think two steps ahead of the critical reader save themselves from a lot of follow up work and this writer has clearly internalised that habit consistently.

Appreciated the way each section connected smoothly to the next without abrupt jumps, and a stop at korivoline kept that flow going nicely, transitions are something most blog writers ignore but the difference is huge for the reader who is trying to follow a sustained line of thought today across many different topics.
Caryamach
Worth flagging that this approach to the topic is fresh without being contrarian, and a stop at centensports extended the same fresh angle, finding original perspective on familiar subjects is rare and this site has clearly developed its own way of seeing rather than echoing the dominant takes from elsewhere consistently.
Bartholomewpiods
Came in confused about the topic and left with a much firmer grasp on it, and after goldmetalshop I felt I could explain this to someone else without hesitation, that is the gold standard for any educational content and most sites simply fail to reach it ever which is unfortunate but true.
Lancestano
Reading this brought back the satisfaction I used to get from blogs ten years ago, and a stop at decordock kept that nostalgic quality alive, sites that capture what was good about an earlier era of internet writing are increasingly precious and this one is doing that without feeling like a deliberate throwback at all.
MarshallKeery
Generally I bookmark sparingly to avoid building up a bookmark graveyard but this one earned a permanent slot, and a stop at otistaylorjr extended that permanence designation, the few sites I keep permanent bookmarks for are sites I expect to use repeatedly and this one has clearly cleared that expectation bar today.
