McDonald’s to offer sustainable Happy Meal toys globally by 2025

Happy meals have been spreading joy to kids and families for more than four decades now. We all at some point would have memories of playing with the toys from the meal. As for most of us we looked forward to the Happy Meal for the toy more than the food. Packaging and the use of plastics have been a major concern for the food chain. Today, McDonalds has taken the first of many steps towards building a more resilient planet for the current generation and the generations to come. They aim at protecting the planet and at the same time keep the fun. Their ambition that by 2025 every toy sold in the Happy Meal should be made from sustainable, made from more renewable, recycled, or certified materials like bio-based and plant-derived materials and certified fiber. This would result in about a 90% reduction of fossil fuel-based plastic in Happy Meal toys, from a baseline of 2018. It is not just a plan but they have already set out with this transition. This is already underway in countries like UK and Ireland and complete in France. All the efforts as of date have resulted in 30% reduction of virgin fossil fuel based plastic use since 2018.
“Protecting the planet for our shared future demands that we look at all parts of our business, including the customer experience. I’m proud that nothing is off the table for our leadership, partners, and families. Together, we’re expanding our positive impact on the environment through the transformation of one of McDonald’s most beloved icons. The thought on our minds was, how do we improve something that our customers already love around the world, without compromising any of the reasons they love it... and in the case of the Happy Meal, what they love is fun!”, Says Jenny McColloch, Chief Sustainability Officer, McDonalds
McDonalds has constructed a team that goes beyond McDonald’s employees, this includes scientists, toy makers and suppliers. And although they are all experts in their own right, they take their inspiration on this project from one important source... kids! The company understands what works best to keep the fun factor high for their board games, classic superheroes and favorite movie character collectibles.
They have leveraged all that the Happy Meal stands for is to make positive impact for the planet feel more personal and exciting. They want families to understand the power of their recycling efforts by constructing new playgrounds out of their old possessions. McDonalds is exploring ways to replace the final traces of virgin plastics in inks and laminates. This feels a lot more consequential when it means matching the color scheme of your favorite movie characters, or creating construction materials strong enough to build a towering T-Rex that holds up throughout even the most rambunctious play time. They also aim at continuing work with their partners to experiment with and invent even more eco-friendly materials. They hope these investments and efforts will support industry-wide solutions as they take steps to reduce plastic waste and conserve our natural resources.
